“Getting To Know You”

A play in two Acts
Winner of five Dayton Theatre Awards
(1m/1f) Unit Set

Actress Judith Macmillan once charmed Rodgers and Hammerstein, becoming something of a legend, performing in the chorus of their musicals on Broadway, and then captivating audiences in many of the summer theatres starring as Anna Leonowens in THE KING & I, Nellie Forbush in SOUTH PACIFIC, and Marie Rainer in THE SOUND OF MUSIC . Now retired, widowed, and living in New Hope, PA., the 77 year old Macmillan grants an interview to a young local reporter, Mark Landray.

It is a snowy afternoon in December, but the blizzard outside is a minor squall compared to the interviews inside. Judith considers this interview her "last hurrah", but little do they both know that this is the beginning of a journey which will dramatically change both their lives. GETTING TO KNOW YOU is a two character by Thomas P. Carr , one set play which extensively utilizes incidental music and lyrics from the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals.

GETTING TO KNOW YOU was originally produced by the Human Race Theatre Company, Dayton, Ohio, Marsha Hanna and Kevin Moore, Producers

WHAT THE CRITICS SAID:

“A WARM, FUNNY, CAPTIVATING NEW PLAY… IT’S A LOCAL RARITY OF A WORLD PREMIER THAT OTHERS IN THE WORLD WOULD BE WISE TO GET IN ON… IT’S HARD TO BELIEVE ANYONE WILL LEAVE THE THEATRE WITHOUT A HAPPY HEART…THERE’S A FAIRY-TALE QUALITY ABOUT ‘GETTING TO KNOW YOU’…HOW OFTEN DOES A TWO CHARACTER PLAY IN WHICH THE TWO CHARACTERS ACTUALLY DEVELOP A NATURAL AND FULFILLING RELATIONSHIP COME ALONG?”

“THOMAS P. CARR’S ‘GETTING TO KNOW YOU’ DELIVERED THE BEST OF ALL POSSIBLE WORLDS; A NOSTALGIC LOVE LETTER TO MUSICAL THEATRE WRAPPED INSIDE A DELIGHTFULLY ENJOYABLE STRAIGHT PLAY… THROUGHOUT ITS BRIGHT AND BREEZY WORLD PREMIER, STAGED AT THE HUMAN RACE THEATRE COMPANY, ‘GETTING TO KNOW YOU’ GLORIFIED BROADWAY’S GOLDEN ERA AND SPECIFICALLY THE OH-SO-FAMILIAR MUSICALS OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN. BUT, UNDERNEATH THE TUNEFUL ADULATION, THE STORY OF 77 YEAR OLD BROADWAY VETERAN JUDITH MACMILLAN STILL RESONATE PROFOUNDLY. ’GETTING TO KNOW YOU’ HAS THE POTENTIAL FOR A HEALTHY RUN REGIONALLY, ON OR OFF-BROADWAY. THERE’S NO DENYING THAT CARR HAS WRITTEN A WONDERFUL CROWD PLEASING WORK.”
